The Quite Power of Institutions: A look at Fremnatos
A few years ago, someone close to my family was struggling with severe mental illness. My mother did everything she could to help her, trying different options until she was finally admitted to Fremnatos, a charity organization in Mekelle.
She is still there today. She is in a much better and more stable place: supported, cared for, and treated with dignity. Seeing that change made me understand the quiet but powerful impact of institutions like this.
Fremnatos supports the elderly, individuals with mental disability, and children. It currently houses around 360 residents, yet nearly 3,000 people remain on the waiting list. Every day, 5–10 people are turned away due to limited space and resources.
Despite these constraints, the organization continues to build. A space that was once used for waste has been transformed into productive farmland, including fruit cultivation, a fish pond, and a small market; creating a system that works toward sustainability while serving its community.
Recently, they were given 43,000 square meters of land to expand by the government. It is an incredible opportunity, but one that requires significant support to fully realize.
What makes this even more meaningful for me is seeing my mother's role in all of this. She has always been someone who organizes donations and supports others whenever she can. But now, she is coordinating a growing network of supporters, encouraging people to contribute on a consistent, monthly basis. This kind of organized and collective effort, where many people give what they can, regularly, has the potential to create real, sustained impact for the organization.
Seeing her work in this more structured and intentional way truly makes me proud. It also shows how powerful community-driven efforts can be when they are consistent and coordinated.
If you are able to support, it could make a real difference for people who are still waiting for a place like this.
